St. Louis was founded in the late 1700's. And during the early 1800's (and specifically during the California gold rush era) this city was one of the last outposts where travelers could stock up on supplies before enountering the "Wild West". As such it quickly earned the nickname "Gateway to the West" and now houses the tallest landmark in the world: The Saint Louis Arch.
